New Children’s Book Teaches Kids How to Go Green
Green living activist April Churchill just released her first children’s book titled Go Green and Give Back, beautifully illustrated in original watercolor. The book teaches kids simple ways to care for the earth in their everyday lives—but not just care for it, enjoy it!
Churchill is the founder and president of The Reflower Project (www.reflowerproject.org) which connects brides (and other event hosts) with local community centers like retirement homes and hospitals to re-purpose floral arrangements from the big day. Churchill’s other project, eponymous to her book title, provides resources for environmentally friendly living from event planning to shopping. The website is www.gogreengiveback.com.
Through her new book, Go Green and Give Back, Churchill aims to inspire the next generation toward caring for and sustaining our planet. She uses fun and simple rhymes to encourage kids to get outside and enjoy creation: ‘Go on a hike or get on your bike/Explore the land or play in the sand,’ while also teaching them environmental responsibility: ‘While brushing your teeth and washing the dishes/Make sure to remember the whales and the fishes.’ Churchill says she hopes to “inspire people to cultivate kindness to the earth, themselves, and each other while bringing awareness to the simple every day ways we can make a difference in protecting our environment.”
Go Green and Give back is masterfully illustrated by Donna J. Lucas—artist, illustrator, art teacher, and Churchill’s mom! She uses bright watercolor to bring the text to life, allowing kids to connect to the heart of the message. Her other work can be viewed at www.donnajeanlucas.com.
